Born Denise Valerie Brown, I was given the nickname, "Chicki," by my father when I was two days' old. Raised in Cranford, New Jersey, the oldest of four children, my passion for reading began in elementary school where I'd make bi-weekly trips to the public library, leaving each time with a stack of books I could barely carry. That stack usually included something by Beverly Cleary and Carolyn Keene, my favorite childhood authors.

(Public Library, Cranford, NJ 1959)
My love of relationship stories began with Cleary’s book, Fifteen. I began writing in junior high school when my friend, Geraldine and I spent our summers sitting under the shade of what we called "the cigar tree" putting our fantasies on paper. When I wasn’t writing, my free time was spent reading on the back porch of my parents house.
Upon graduation from high school I went directly into the workforce, married young, had a daughter and divorced early. The majority of my working career was spent in the corporate sector in positions ranging from receptionist to executive assistant. I found office support mind numbingly dull and took time off from the corporate world twice -- once to run a typesetting business and a second time to run a home daycare center. For many years I also worked as a volunteer and then a paid staff employee for my church.

My husband, Bill and I met and married in 1976. We were blessed with another daughter in 1979. In 1994, when we couldn't take the northeast winters any longer, we moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia.
Reaching 50 was a turning point in my life. I began writing in response to an inner urge to record the stories that had been accumulating in my head. A job layoff helped to nudge me into the decision to write full time.
In 2004 I won the Grand Prize winner in the Black Expressions Book Club Fiction Writing Contest and was published in the November 2005 and September 2006 issues of Releasing Times magazine. For three years I led the Camp Creek Writer's Fellowship in East Point, Georgia, a group I founded. In 2005 The Southern Crescent Writer’s Group in Morrow, Georgia honored me by asking me to speak at their annual conference. I am a member of Romance Writers of America and Georgia Romance Writers.

Oh, and I still love television!
